Darren Scotchbrook, the partner of a former chemistry teacher convicted of sexual misconduct with two pupils, has been accused of sending threatening and racially abusive emails to the detective investigating her case. The allegations against Scotchbrook were heard in July at St Albans Magistrates' Court, where it was stated he sent numerous threatening emails to Detective Sergeant Terry Mulcahy.

These messages were reportedly sent weeks before Scotchbrook testified in support of his partner, Sally-Anne Bowen, during her trial. Bowen, 65, was found guilty of having sex with a 14-year-old pupil up to 30 times and of kissing another teenage boy and allowing him to fondle her. The offenses occurred when Bowen taught at Christ's College in Finchley, north London, between 1986 and 1988.

Scotchbrook, eight years younger than Bowen and whom she met when he was 20, is accused of racially aggravated harassment. The allegations claim he showed hostility towards Pakistani people in his communications with Detective Sergeant Mulcahy. Scotchbrook is also facing a separate trial for harassment allegations involving four victims, which are linked to the case.

Bowen, who has a 24-year-old daughter with Scotchbrook, denied the claims. She told the court that she had a low libido and a congenital gynecological condition that made sex painful and unenjoyable. During her trial, Scotchbrook testified about their sex life, describing Bowen as often 'reluctant' and their sexual encounters as 'quick.' He detailed their first sexual encounter and stated, 'I was never a great lover. I have always been quick.'

Bowen, a first-time teacher at the time, allegedly engaged in provocative behavior and discussed sex openly in her chemistry classes. One of the pupils testified that he had sex with Bowen approximately 20 to 30 times over several months and believed her to be his girlfriend. The second complainant stated that he kissed Bowen once in a cafe and remembers touching her breasts. A third former pupil recalled an instance where Bowen discussed 'the merits of different sexual positions' with students from a 'sex manual.'

Bowen testified that she did not dress provocatively, stating, 'I wasn't going to dress like Margaret Thatcher.' She denied wearing tight tops or mini skirts, asserting that her skirts were not short enough to violate school rules. She called the allegations a 'total fabrication' and 'the workings of a fantasy,' suggesting the first complainant might have had a crush on her. She also stated she did not remember the second complainant.

Bowen was banned from teaching by the Teaching Regulatory Agency in December 2023. Scotchbrook is expected to appear in court next month, with his trial anticipated later this year or in early 2027.
