Teacher Killed in Six Flags Roller Coaster Fall, Family Seeks Answers Amid Company Silence

A teacher celebrating his niece's birthday died after falling from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday. Hassan Kariem, 42, an education technology professional at Wesley International Academy, was ejected from his seat and collided with the ride's structure before falling to the ground in front of other park-goers.

Kariem's fiancée's niece, who was celebrating her 13th birthday, was present during the incident. "His final moments and words were with her," said Joshua Nelson, Kariem's future brother-in-law, who was informed by the niece. "She called me crying after the ride ended stating Mr. Hassan fell off the ride."

Witnesses described a gruesome scene, with images of Kariem falling and hitting the ride's metal frame circulating on social media. His family has appealed for these images to cease being shared.

Six Flags has faced criticism for its initial silence following the tragedy. Marsha Archer, a crisis management expert with nearly 20 years of experience, called for leadership from the company, suggesting that President and CEO John Riley should issue a public statement.

"Someone human has to step up to the plate and start answering those questions," Archer stated. "I think the first and most important audience to address is the family of Hassan Kariem."

A Six Flags spokesperson released a statement expressing deep sadness and offering condolences to the family. "The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they complete their investigation," the statement read. The park also noted it was providing support to those affected and withholding further comment out of respect for the family's privacy.

Archer advocated for more consistent communication from the company through regular updates, including social media posts and press releases. She also suggested that Six Flags should inform its employees about the accident details to help them address guest inquiries.

In response to the incident, Six Flags has temporarily closed similar roller coasters across its parks "out of an abundance of caution." A spokesperson confirmed that "The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority." The Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia has been closed indefinitely, as has the similarly designed roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California.

Other Six Flags attractions affected by temporary closures include Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois; Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey; Leviathan and Behemoth at Canada's Wonderland in Ontario; Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds in North Carolina and South Carolina; and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island in Ohio. Mako at SeaWorld Orlando has also been closed.

An investigation into the circumstances of Kariem's fall is underway. The Goliath roller coaster is noted as the tallest in Georgia, reaching speeds of up to 70 mph and climbing over 200 feet.
