Teacher Intervenes After Toddler Brings Loaded Handgun to Michigan Daycare

A teacher at Children's World Early Learning Center in Canton Township, Michigan, swiftly intervened on Monday morning when a toddler produced a loaded handgun. School officials reported that the child initially had the firearm in its holster before removing it, at which point a teacher secured the weapon and contacted the police.

Authorities have arrested one of the child's parents in connection with the incident and are working with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to determine appropriate charges. The identity of the arrested parent has not yet been released. Police confirmed that another parent, who is an officer in a neighboring community, was not taken into custody.

Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy commended the daycare staff for their preparedness and rapid response. "I've watched the video, and I've seen what their staff did, and they were prepared and ready to be able to remove the firearm and keep all the kids safe there," Bialy told CBS News. He added that the established protocols and the instructor's actions were crucial in preventing a tragedy.

Officials from Children's World Early Learning Center stated that safety is their top priority and expressed pride in their staff's quick actions. "Although this incident was out of our control, we are very proud of our staff and especially the teacher who responded so quickly," a statement from the school read. "It was an unfortunate incident. No one was hurt and all safety measures were followed."

As the investigation continues, Chief Bialy urged gun owners to ensure their firearms are stored securely, especially in environments where children might be present. "We have to understand where our firearms are and we have a duty to make sure that we keep them secure," he said. "The law is very clear: If a child is present or you anticipate a child being present, you have to take those precautions."
