Teacher Featured in 'Educating Cardiff' Pleads Guilty to Sexually Assaulting Teenager
Gareth Ritter admitted to sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl after offering her a ride home from an event.
Gareth Ritter, a teacher who was featured in the Channel 4 documentary series "Educating Cardiff," has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. The 44-year-old admitted to the charge during his trial.
Ritter was offering to drive the victim home after an event in Cardiff when he stopped at a flat he owned, claiming he needed to check it before a new tenant arrived. The court heard that once inside, he touched the teenager inappropriately on a balcony and later kissed her in the hallway. The woman, now in her 20s, testified that she told Ritter, "I'm a good girl, I don't do this. I go to a Christian school." Ritter then drove her home, asking if she intended to tell anyone about the incident.
The woman reported the assault several years later, after police discovered intimate images of her, then under 18, on Ritter's phone during an unrelated investigation. These images had been taken with her consent during a video conversation with another man, then stored on his tablet, accessed and shared by housemates, and subsequently found on Ritter's phone. Ritter also pleaded guilty to the possession and distribution of unlawful images.
When initially interviewed by police in December 2022, Ritter denied knowing about the Cardiff Bay flat or taking the woman there, and also denied giving her a lift home. A year later, during a second interview, he admitted his previous account was not truthful.
Ritter was granted bail until his sentencing on November 4. The court has indicated that all admitted charges carry a custodial sentence and that immediate custody would be considered.
