Teacher Dies in Iowa Lake Drowning While Attempting to Rescue Student
A fifth-grade teacher and a 10-year-old student drowned in Lake Macbride State Park on September 22 after the student fell into the water, prompting the teacher to attempt a rescue.
A fifth-grade teacher in Iowa died attempting to rescue a student who had fallen into Lake Macbride State Park, authorities reported. The student, 10-year-old Ahmed Osman, fell into the water near a spillway on September 22 while on a field trip with his classmates from Borlaug Elementary.
Hannah Jorgensen, 24, the student's teacher, jumped into the lake to save Osman after he slipped on rocks. She instructed her other 13 students to call 911, which they did using her phone. A bystander also entered the water in an attempt to assist, but was unsuccessful.
First responders recovered Jorgensen's body from the lake at approximately 12:43 p.m. and pronounced her dead at the scene. The search for Osman was suspended due to darkness that evening and resumed the following afternoon, when his body was found.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Jorgensen's obituary described her lifelong aspiration to be a teacher and noted that she died protecting her students. Osman was remembered as a member of the Neighborhood Centers community, having participated in their preschool and after-school programs.
Osman's father, Mohamed, recounted packing a cake for his son's lunch that day and learning later that his child had gone missing. He described finding his son's body, stating, "It's the first time I felt some sadness like that. To find your son's body in front of you, no moving, no speaking." He referred to Jorgensen as a hero who "sacrificed herself to save my son."
