Martin Gallacher, 46, was convicted last week at Paisley Sheriff Court of 14 charges related to grooming and abusing vulnerable students over more than a decade. The abuse occurred during classes and at school-related clubs, including badminton and football.
The initial complaint about Gallacher's conduct was received by Renfrewshire Council in October 2024. At the time, the council stated that an investigation found insufficient evidence to take action, and the complainer eventually left the school without being believed. Gallacher remained in his teaching post.
As news of the abuse spread, other victims came forward. During the trial, evidence presented indicated that Gallacher targeted students when they were alone or in his classes. He also communicated with some victims through messaging and gaming platforms, and offered them gifts and money. The court heard Gallacher inappropriately touched the children. He denied wrongdoing, claiming any contact was innocent and related to his roles as a teacher or coach, or that he was steadying himself due to mild cerebral palsy.
Prosecutor Jason Stark has requested that the sheriff consider imposing a sexual harm prevention order and non-harassment orders to restrict Gallacher's future activities and prevent contact with his victims. Sheriff Eoin McGinty noted that Gallacher exploited the vulnerability of the children in a manipulative and predatory manner. Gallacher was remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing next month.
Following the conviction, Renfrewshire Council announced it has commissioned an independent learning review into the case. A spokesperson for the council expressed sorrow for the impact on the victims and stated that the safety and well-being of pupils are paramount. Wellbeing support is being offered to those affected. The review will involve police, health services, and multi-agency partners.
