Teacher, Armed Parent Thwarted Oregon School Attack
A teacher engaged the student attacker before a civilian with a concealed firearm intervened, killing the suspect and preventing further casualties at an Oregon elementary school.
A teacher's courageous actions and the intervention of an armed parent prevented a tragedy from becoming far worse at an Oregon elementary school, authorities said. The 16-year-old suspect, who had previously attended the school, opened fire on a special educational needs classroom.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz stated that the suspect fired as many as 15 rounds in the class, armed with approximately 44 additional rounds of shotgun ammunition. The teacher, identified as 25-year-old Meghan Lambert, engaged the attacker, "almost certainly helping prevent more bloodshed." She sustained no physical injuries.
Two students, 5-year-old Rhoam Summer and another child whose family wished to remain unidentified, were killed in the attack. Two others were injured: a 54-year-old teacher who remained hospitalized and a 7-year-old student in serious but stable condition.
An armed parent, identified by his family as 36-year-old carpenter Kaylub Giamanco, intervened after witnessing the suspect fire on a vehicle outside the school and then enter the building. Giamanco, who had a legally concealed firearm in his vehicle, confronted the suspect and fired multiple times, fatally wounding him. Police stated the suspect was stopped with approximately 44 more rounds of shotgun ammunition. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and authorities are investigating how the suspect acquired the firearm and his exact movements leading up to the incident.
President Donald Trump praised the bystander's actions, calling him a "great hero" and noting the situation could have been "much worse" without his intervention. Oregon Governor Kotek also acknowledged the man's heroic actions in stopping further loss of life, expressing support for the emotional toll such events can take.
Giamanco's family stated he is a lifelong resident of Bend and is not seeking recognition, expressing gratitude to first responders and the community while requesting privacy.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at the suspect's home, and a search is ongoing.
