American tennis player Taylor Townsend has withdrawn from the Guadalajara Open after undergoing emergency surgery, just days after securing a significant career achievement.
Taylor Townsend has withdrawn from the Guadalajara Open due to emergency surgery, the American tennis player announced on Wednesday night. The announcement came shortly after Townsend and her doubles partner, Kateřina Siniaková, completed a career Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Open women's doubles title.
Townsend shared the news via Instagram stories, stating, “Welp.. this s-t definitely wasn’t on my bingo card..😭” She added, “Through trails and tribulations..still I rise 🐦🔥 I’ll update yall soon❤️.” She later posted a picture from a hospital bed.
Townsend and Siniaková defeated Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5–7, 6–0, 6–2 in the U.S. Open final last week. This victory marked their achievement of winning all four Grand Slam titles as a team, adding to their previous wins at Wimbledon in 2024, the Australian Open in 2025, and the French Open earlier in 2026.
Townsend released a statement to the WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara, explaining her withdrawal. “On the heels of achieving my first career grand slam at the US Open, I was so excited to play in front of all of you in Guadalajara. Because of emergency surgery, I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart,” the statement read. “But, I’m looking forward to coming back here next year to see all of you, the greatest tennis fans. Viva Mexico!!!”
It remains unclear whether Townsend had the surgery in Guadalajara or returned to the U.S. for the procedure. She had won her opening match at the Guadalajara tournament on Monday.
In addition to her doubles success, Townsend competed in the U.S. Open singles draw, reaching the fourth round before being eliminated by top seed Aryna Sabalenka. Townsend is currently ranked as the world's No. 2 doubles player, while Siniaková holds the top spot.
