Taylor Swift has remained publicly silent as her close friend Ed Sheeran navigates controversy stemming from the removal of rapper Macklemore from his tour. Macklemore was dropped from the Loop Tour after making onstage chants of "Free Palestine" and describing Israel's actions as "genocide" and "apartheid."
Sheeran himself released a statement clarifying that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour's promoters and venues, not by him personally. He expressed a desire to continue the tour and avoid negatively impacting fans or crew members who depend on the concerts for income.
Following Macklemore's removal, four of Sheeran's tour openers withdrew in solidarity, citing their opposition to what they termed "genocide in Gaza."
Macklemore has a history of controversy, including drawing criticism in 2014 for wearing a costume that appeared to be an antisemitic caricature of Jewish people, an act he claimed was unintentional.
Swift and Sheeran share a long-standing personal and professional relationship, marked by collaborations on songs like "Everything Has Changed" and "Run." Sheeran previously served as an opening act for Swift's "Red Tour" in 2013 and has made surprise appearances during her Eras Tour. Their bond has been highlighted over the years through mutual support and public acknowledgments.
While Swift has, in recent years, used her platform to advocate for certain progressive causes, including endorsing Kamala Harris and supporting LGBTQ+ rights, her public statements on political matters have historically been selective. She has also faced criticism from some on the left for not being more outspoken on certain issues.
David Sams, CEO of Sam’s Global Companies, commented on the broader trend of celebrities engaging with politics, suggesting that performers should "stay in their own lane" to avoid adding unnecessary noise to current global events.
