Pop superstar Taylor Swift is facing significant backlash from fans after inviting Kelly Stafford, wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, to her recent wedding ceremony. The online criticism stems from comments Stafford made approximately two years ago, criticizing the media attention surrounding Swift's relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
During an episode of her podcast, 'The Morning After,' in February 2024, following the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory, Kelly Stafford expressed frustration with the constant coverage of Swift and Kelce. "I don't really care. But I don't know if I want to see another four months of Taylor Swift Travis Kelce coverage," she stated at the time, noting that a win would likely lead to "them everywhere."
Despite these past remarks, Swift reportedly extended an invitation to the Staffords for her wedding, which took place at Madison Square Garden. Images of Kelly Stafford attending the event circulated online, triggering a strong reaction from fans who questioned the decision to invite someone who had publicly criticized the singer.
Online commentary on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) expressed confusion and disapproval. One user wrote, "Ummm that's strange his wife dissed her and now they get invited. Had no idea they were friends." Others were more critical, with one tweet calling the couple "douchebag[s]" and another mocking Stafford's attendance by calling it "Kelly Stafford's Super Bowl."
Fans also voiced sentiments such as, "Aw look at Kelly. Go on make it about you girl," and "Kelly is so annoying."
In the wake of the fan criticism, Kelly Stafford has since addressed her earlier comments. In an interview with Us Weekly, she stated, "I did get a lot of heat from them [Swift's fans]. I was like, 'Whoa, I love Taylor.'" She explained that her concern was not with Swift herself but with the level of attention her relationship garnered, which she felt was overshadowing the NFL games. "It was a good business decision for the NFL, but I almost felt like it was outshining the games," Stafford said. "I think that's what bothered me. I was a little jealous of the fact that they were getting all this attention and all of a sudden the football game was the sideshow. So, yeah, maybe I let jealousy get the best of me."
