Taylor Swift Becomes Most Decorated VMA Artist, Dedicates Win to Dolly Parton

Taylor Swift achieved a significant milestone at the 2026 MTV VMAs, earning the Video of the Year award for "The Fate of Ophelia" and dedicating the win to the late country music legend Dolly Parton. This victory also made Swift the most decorated artist in the history of the event, holding 33 awards and breaking her tie with Beyoncé.

Swift, 36, was recognized for her work on "The Fate of Ophelia," which also earned her the award for Best Direction for "Opalite." During her acceptance speech, she expressed her deep admiration for Parton, calling her the "ultimate showgirl." Swift referenced Parton's storytelling prowess, likening her songs to vivid music videos.

"Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich," Swift said. "Listening to her songs, it's like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time you hear what she has written."

Parton passed away on August 25 at the age of 80 following a battle with an undisclosed cancer. Swift continued her tribute by acknowledging Parton's grace and gratitude throughout her career.

Earlier in the evening, Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors. With this award, she surpassed Beyoncé's previous record of 30 VMA wins. "The main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun," Swift told the audience. "You make it so rewarding! Because you actually care about what we’re making."

The Artist Director Honors celebrates artists who have demonstrated a sustained and influential directorial vision. Swift has directed 18 of her 60 music videos, including those for "The Fate of Ophelia," "Opalite," "The Man," and "cardigan."

Following her major win, Swift debuted her new music video for "Patient Zero." The video, which she directed and wrote, features Dakota Johnson, Colin Farrell, and Cara Delevingne.

While Swift received the top honor, Madonna had a highly successful night, securing seven awards including Artist of the Year. The 68-year-old artist also won Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for "Bring Your Love."

During her acceptance speech for Best Dance for "Confessions II - The Film," Madonna made a series of remarks that caused confusion among some fans, questioning the award's purpose and making an unusual comment about a laser. She was joined on stage by Charli XCX and Troye Sivan.

Another notable winner was British singer Sienna Spiro, who took home the Best New Artist award.

Dolly Parton was honored throughout the telecast with a tribute performance by Kacey Musgraves. Musgraves performed Parton's 1974 hit "I Will Always Love You," an emotional rendition that moved many in the audience and viewers on social media. Musgraves channeled Parton's iconic look for her performance.

Host Snoop Dogg reacted to the tribute by saying, "That’s how you honor a legend... we love you, Dolly."
