Pop superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce have added a Samoyed puppy to their family. The fluffy white dog was reportedly flown into President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida, on a private plane. While the couple may be equipped to provide the canine with extensive care, Samoyeds are noted for being a demanding breed.

According to pet charity PDSA, Samoyeds, despite their friendly and gentle nature, are energetic and require structured training. Their thick coats also necessitate consistent grooming attention.

Research from Yell and dog grooming expert Shirelle Moore has identified other popular dog breeds that, despite their appeal, are considered high-maintenance. The study ranked breeds based on grooming needs, costs, and temperamental requirements.

High-Maintenance Breeds

The English Springer Spaniel topped the list, requiring grooming every two weeks with an estimated annual cost of £1,222. These dogs are known for boundless energy, needing significant daily exercise and mental stimulation. The Labrador Retriever ranked second, also needing grooming every two weeks, with an annual cost around £1,014, though their exercise needs are more manageable at one hour per day.

French Bulldogs, despite their popularity, were identified as the third most demanding, needing grooming every two to four weeks at an average annual cost of £503. Beyond grooming, they require regular care for skin folds and ear cleansing to prevent infections. Miniature Schnauzers came in fourth, with grooming every four to six weeks costing approximately £458 annually. This breed is also prone to hereditary health issues and has a tendency to bark, requiring substantial exercise and mental challenges to prevent frustration and territorial behavior.

Golden Retrievers were listed fifth, with grooming needed every eight to ten weeks and an average cost of £388 per year. While they require moderate attention, they are generally adaptable and easily trained. Cocker Spaniels ranked sixth, needing grooming every six to eight weeks at an average of £349 annually, and are prone to ear and eye problems.

German Shepherds require grooming every four to eight weeks, costing about £338 per year, and need considerable socialization, training, and exercise. Miniature Smooth-Haired Dachshunds require grooming every four to six weeks (£302 annually) and are known for high separation anxiety and a stubborn streak. Staffordshire Bull Terriers need grooming every four to eight weeks (£286 annually) but require frequent and lengthy exercise, with potential for separation anxiety and stubbornness. The Bulldog, tenth on the list, needs grooming every eight to ten weeks (£172 annually) and, while not requiring much exercise, is prone to breathing issues and needs careful attention to wrinkled skin.

A special mention was given to the Jack Russell Terrier, which has seen a resurgence in popularity. While noted for fewer health issues compared to cross-breeds, they possess a bold and fearless temperament, often exhibiting stubbornness. Experts suggest they require significant attention, exercise, and supervision, making them potentially unsuitable for first-time owners or young families due to their boredom-proneness and difficulty in training.
