Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have drawn criticism on social media for holding raffles of designer items, including watches and bags, at their recent wedding ceremony held at Madison Square Garden. The event, attended by approximately 1,000 guests, featured luxury prizes such as Cartier watches and Chanel bags, with one guest reportedly winning a car.
Online commentators expressed dismay at the perceived extravagance, with some describing the raffles as "peak excess" and "performance art." Others suggested alternative uses for the donated items, proposing they could have been given to essential workers like police officers and sanitation staff, or used to support charitable causes.
Despite the online criticism, representatives for Swift and Kelce announced that the couple donated $26 million to various charities in the week of their wedding. Beneficiaries included nine food banks, three children's hospitals, and seven educational programs across the United States. One recipient, The Store, a charity focused on food security in Middle Tennessee, publicly expressed gratitude for the "transformative gift."
The wedding celebration was attended by numerous celebrities from the entertainment and sports industries, including musicians like Jack Antonoff, Dua Lipa, and Ed Sheeran, as well as actors and athletes. Swift and Kelce, both 36, publicly announced their engagement in 2023. Swift previously described their relationship in a 2023 interview as two individuals supporting each other in their respective careers.
