Filmmaker Taylor Sheridan, known for the hit series "Yellowstone," revealed that his initial plans for retirement were sidelined by a significant financial commitment: the $330 million purchase of the iconic 6666 Ranch in Texas.
Sheridan, 56, stated on the "Rodeo Time" podcast that he had intended to conclude his work after "Yellowstone," having already purchased a 600-acre property in Weatherford, Texas, where he planned to focus on equestrian pursuits. "I was set up to retire. I was going to be done after Yellowstone. I'd bought the ranch in Weatherford, and I paid cash. I didn't owe anybody anything," he explained.
However, the opportunity to acquire the sprawling 266,000-acre 6666 Ranch, which served as a backdrop for "Yellowstone" season four, altered his trajectory. The historic property had been in the same family for over 150 years before Sheridan became involved. "I knew that if I bought this ranch that I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while," Sheridan admitted.
Sheridan recalled negotiating the purchase price, noting he was approximately $300 million short of the $330 million asking price. This financial gap prompted him to reconsider a previously offered overall deal with Paramount.
"They had been after me to make an overall deal," Sheridan said. "They were terrified that I was going to go to greener pastures and leave them and go somewhere else... But once this happened, I called them and I said, 'You know what? I think I'm ready to make an overall deal.'"
Following the negotiations, Sheridan led a group of investors who finalized the purchase of the 6666 Ranch in January 2022. Since then, his partnership with Paramount has yielded numerous projects, including "Mayor of Kingstown," "Lioness," "Landman," "Tulsa King," "The Madison," and the "Yellowstone" prequels "1883" and "1923."
Earlier this year, Sheridan also shared accounts of previous financial hardship, detailing periods of homelessness and living in his car during his early years in Hollywood as he pursued his career ambitions.
