Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the acclaimed Western drama "Yellowstone," has offered a rare insight into Kevin Costner's exit from the series, citing a contractual agreement as the primary reason for his departure.
During an appearance on the "Bill Simmons Podcast," Sheridan explained that Costner, who portrayed Montana rancher John Dutton, was initially slated to appear for only the first three seasons of the show. Sheridan's original vision for the series involved Costner's character's youngest son taking over the narrative reins after the third season. However, Sheridan noted that network executives were hesitant to proceed without Costner, even though the actor was reportedly ready to move on to other projects.
"He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do, but he stayed on for another two seasons," Sheridan said, adding that Costner continued his involvement because "Yellowstone" had become a "behemoth" and a massive hit. The show's success led to pressure from cable companies who sought to secure a certain number of "Yellowstone" seasons as part of their deals, highlighting the immense power of a popular television series.
Ultimately, Costner decided to pursue his own endeavors, which included his directorial project "Horizon: An American Saga." Sheridan confirmed that Costner's departure meant a truncated conclusion for his character, though it did not fundamentally alter the show's overall narrative arc. He recounted that his last conversation with Costner involved discussions about the actor's passion project and the potential to work out a schedule for his exit from "Yellowstone." Sheridan maintained that any issues between him and Costner were typically resolvable through phone conversations, but acknowledged that the involvement of lawyers can complicate communication and lead to misrepresentations.
"Yellowstone," which aired from 2018 to 2024, followed the Dutton family as they navigated their roles as powerful ranchers and politicians in Montana. Costner's character, John Dutton, was written off the show in its final season, which concluded in 2024. Despite his absence, the character was mentioned in the show's May 2024 spinoff, "Dutton Ranch."
