Taylor Sheridan, the prolific writer and director behind the hit series "Yellowstone," revealed that he was on the verge of retirement before an unexpected opportunity to purchase a massive Texas ranch for $330 million rerouted his career. The deal for the 266,000-acre 6666 Ranch, also known as the Four Sixes Ranch, ultimately led to an exclusivity agreement with Paramount.
Sheridan, 56, stated on the "Rodeo Time" podcast that he believed he had fulfilled all his professional ambitions and had planned to scale back his work after "Yellowstone." He had already purchased a 600-acre property in Weatherford, Texas, intending to focus on raising horses. "I was set up to retire. I was going to be done after Yellowstone. I'd bought the ranch in Weatherford, and I paid cash. I didn't owe anybody anything," Sheridan said. "And I was going to put my feet up and show horses and have my little hobby herd over here and that was it."
His plans shifted in 2021 when the historic Four Sixes Ranch, which had served as a filming location for "Yellowstone" seasons, became available. The ranch, which had been owned by the same family for over 150 years and is nearly twice the size of Chicago, presented a significant financial challenge. Sheridan admitted, "I knew that if I bought this ranch that I was not going to be quitting my day job for a while."
He recalled negotiating with the ranch's owners, who offered it to him for $330 million. "Well, boys, I'm a little short. I don't have, in fact, I'm about 300 million short," he told them.
This financial hurdle prompted Sheridan to revisit a prior offer from Paramount for an overall deal. "They were terrified that I was going to go to greener pastures and leave them and go somewhere else, which I probably was," he said. Paramount had reportedly been trying for years to secure an exclusive contract with him. Sheridan contacted the network, expressing his readiness to sign an overall deal and specifying a financial figure that would enable him to acquire the ranch.
Following the agreement with Paramount, Sheridan led a group of investors to finalize the purchase of the Four Sixes Ranch in January 2022. Since then, his output for the network has included series such as "Mayor of Kingstown," "Lioness," "Landman," "Tulsa King," and "The Madison," as well as "Yellowstone" spin-offs "1883" and "1923."
Sheridan also previously shared his experiences with homelessness during his early years in Hollywood, having lived in his car for extended periods while pursuing his career aspirations. "I was homeless twice," he told Town & Country. "I lived in my car. Sometimes I’d go to Ojai, just somewhere where I could safely sleep. I did that for six months." He added that he could have chosen a stable job but opted instead to sleep in his car to pursue his dream.
