Hip-hop producer Tay Keith, whose real name was Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, died from the toxic effects of drugs, including ketamine and an active ingredient in kratom, according to information released by the Nashville Medical Examiner’s Office. He was 29.
Officers found Keith deceased in his Nashville apartment on June 18 after conducting a welfare check. Reports indicate that toxicology results found ketamine and mitragynine, the active compound in kratom, in his system. Nicotine and ethanol were also detected. The medical examiner noted that Keith also had mild coronary artery disease.
Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia that can act as a sedative and affect the brain's opioid receptors, potentially reducing pain and inducing calmness. It is legal at the federal level in the United States, though it is unknown if Keith was intentionally using the substance.
Keith, who hailed from Memphis, Tennessee, rose to prominence in the music industry by producing hits for major artists. He began collaborating with rapper BlocBoy JB as a teenager. Their work caught the attention of Drake, leading to their involvement in his 2018 hit song “Look Alive.”
That same year, Keith produced for Travis Scott's widely successful track “Sicko Mode.” In 2019, he received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song for his contribution to “Sicko Mode.” He earned a second nomination in the same category in 2024 for Drake and 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex.”
Keith was recognized for his prolific work, earning producer of the year at the 2024 BMI Awards. He was also named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Music list in 2025. His career included collaborations with artists such as Cardi B, Eminem, and Beyoncé.
His last social media post on May 7 promoted Chris Brown’s song “Call Your Name,” featuring GloRilla and Sexyy Red. Following the news of his death, tributes from fellow artists and collaborators began to appear online. BlocBoy JB shared a message on his Instagram Stories expressing his grief, and artist Hitkidd also posted a tribute.
