Tatum O'Neal Seen Out With Family Ahead of 63rd Birthday
The Oscar winner, who survived a near-fatal stroke in 2020, was photographed with her daughter and son-in-law in Los Angeles.
Tatum O'Neal was recently seen with her family in Los Angeles, an outing that comes ahead of her 63rd birthday on November 5. The actress was photographed at a fan convention alongside her daughter, Emily McEnroe, and son-in-law, Tim Massarelli.
The appearance follows O'Neal's recovery from a May 2020 stroke, which her son Kevin McEnroe described as near-fatal. In a July 2023 interview with People, McEnroe recounted that his mother experienced multiple seizures and went into cardiac arrest, spending six weeks in a coma. He noted that there were moments when he and his siblings feared she would not survive.
McEnroe explained that O'Neal had been isolating during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and had begun abusing medications, including those prescribed for neck and back pain, as well as rheumatoid arthritis. He expressed concern that her isolation, combined with the use of heavier pharmaceuticals like morphine, led to a place where she felt little hope.
O'Neal, who made her film debut at nine years old in the 1973 movie "Paper Moon" alongside her father, Ryan O'Neal, became the youngest person to win a competitive Academy Award. She received the award for best supporting actress at age 10 in 1974.
Her relationship with her father was reportedly turbulent, with O'Neal detailing in her 2004 autobiography, "A Paper Life," that he became jealous of her success. She also alleged instances of physical and emotional abuse and his struggles with drug addiction.
Ryan O'Neal died in December 2023 at age 82. Tatum O'Neal later shared her reaction to being excluded from his will, stating in a February 2025 interview with Variety, "Keep it, motherf-----."
