Task Force Lacks Coordinator for Seven Years Due to HR Dispute

The SE Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, which provides assistance to victims of drug-related intimidation, has been operating without a lead coordinator for seven years. This prolonged vacancy stems from an internal Health Service Executive (HSE) human resources issue and a grievance process dispute involving the appointed coordinator, Chris Purnell.

Purnell has been on administrative leave, often referred to as 'gardening leave,' for the entire seven-year period. This situation means that vulnerable families seeking help to escape intimidation from drug dealers have been doing so without the dedicated leadership of a task force coordinator.

Task force chair Stephen Murphy stated that the absence of a lead coordinator is "seriously hindering" their work. The task force's objective is to eradicate drug-related intimidation through inter-agency support. The prolonged lack of a coordinator raises concerns about the effectiveness and reach of the support available to those affected by drug crime.

The Daily Mail reported that the situation is potentially life-threatening for families who are being intimidated by drug dealers over debts.

This situation highlights the challenges faced by specialized task forces when internal HR processes and disputes lead to extended periods of leadership vacuum, impacting the delivery of essential services to vulnerable populations.
