Target Opens First Hamptons Store With Unique Design to Meet Local Ordinances

Target has opened its first store in the Hamptons, a region known for its exclusivity and multi-million dollar estates. The new Bridgehampton location features a design that deviates from the typical Target aesthetic to comply with the town's stringent commercial regulations. The exterior boasts a muted grey storefront with white shingles and an all-white bullseye sign, a departure from the brand's signature red.

According to the retailer, the design choice was made "to reflect Bridgehampton’s coastal vibes." Due to local laws that prohibit brightly lit signage, the bullseye is not internally illuminated and relies on subtle overhead lighting. Inside, the store has replaced standard fluorescent lights with tasteful hanging fixtures featuring basket-woven shades.

The interior design also includes custom-printed toile wallpaper that depicts the store's bull terrier mascot in various Hamptons-themed scenes, such as trotting past a bottle of Wölffer rosé and near the Beebe windmill. These upscale touches extend to the fitting rooms, which are designed to resemble yacht club locker rooms, and Adirondack porch chairs at the entrance.

It took Target seven years to secure the location in Bridgehampton, which was formerly a K-mart. The store is situated miles from the homes of prominent residents, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck. The area is also frequented by celebrities like Madonna and Christie Brinkley.

Brandt Uthus, Target's real estate chief, stated that the company spent years searching for a suitable site within the Hamptons' primary shopping center. Before this opening, residents had to travel over an hour to Riverhead for such retail options.

Despite the tailored design, the new store has drawn mixed reactions from the community. Some social media users have expressed concerns that the store's presence will increase traffic and alter the character of Bridgehampton. One commenter lamented that it's "another excuse for 500 distracted drivers to clog roads... At what point do we admit we’re destroying the very thing that made people want to live here in the first place?"

However, others see the store as a welcome addition. Southampton resident Bobby Huneken countered, "We need this," indicating a local desire for greater retail accessibility.
