Fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow has publicly stated her shift in focus from achieving thinness to prioritizing fitness. In a recent Instagram Reel, the 32-year-old shared her perspective, emphasizing a desire not to be 'smaller' or 'take up less space.'

Shifting Focus to Strength

Hembrow encouraged her followers to move away from restrictive eating and fad diets, suggesting that such approaches may hinder progress. Instead, she advocates for a focus on building muscle, increasing strength, and discovering personal capabilities.

"If you're tired of starting over. If you want to feel stronger. Build muscle. Sculpt your body. Actually see what you're capable of," Hembrow wrote in her post.

Some social media users questioned Hembrow's message, noting her own slim physique. However, many others expressed support for her stance.

Debunking the 'Toning' Myth

Previously, Hembrow addressed the concept of restrictive eating in a TikTok video, warning that reducing calorie intake to achieve a lean appearance might be counterproductive. She explained that the sculpted look often desired by women is typically achieved through muscle development, not extreme restriction.

"I think we've all been there as women, you want to be skinny or you want to be more lean and toned and so you think less food, more cardio, more restrictive," she stated. "When in reality, this can be the exact thing that's stopping you from getting the results you want."

According to Hembrow, adequate nutrition is crucial for muscle recovery, energy levels, and workout performance. She asserted that insufficient calorie and nutrient intake can lead to poor workouts and hinder muscle building.

"To build muscle, one, you need to be eating enough. You need to be eating enough to recover properly," she said. "You need to be eating enough to be able to put in energy into your workouts. Otherwise, if you're not getting enough calories, if you're not getting enough nutrients, your workouts are going to suck. You're not going to be building any muscle."

Hembrow cautioned that while restrictive diets might cause initial weight loss, they can result in long-term issues such as fatigue, intense cravings, and binge eating. She stressed the importance of promoting a healthy body image, particularly in the face of online pressures to meet unrealistic standards.

"The goal should be to build a strong, healthy body that burns energy well, that performs well, that feels good," Hembrow concluded. "Trust me, I want you guys to be feeling and looking good, so let's not restrict our bodies and let's actually fuel them."
