Syrian Man Reclaims Secret Library After 15 Years in Exile

A Syrian man, Abu Bilal, has returned to his home city of Homs after more than 15 years in exile to find a secret library he had concealed behind a false wall still intact. Bilal had fled his home when the Syrian civil war began and had been living in Kuwait.

Footage shared by his son shows Bilal using a hammer to break down the wall. After removing sheets of cardboard, he uncovered a substantial collection of books, including biographies of the Prophet Mohammed, works of Sunni Islamic scholarship, and a complete set of Jami' al-Usul fi Ahadith al-Rasul.

"Thank God, everything is fine so far, apart from some dust," Bilal said, inspecting his library. He also discovered money that had been stored alongside the books, expressing gratitude that it remained in good condition.

His son, Bilal Alloun, who posted the video online, stated that his father had refused to leave Syria until the library was secured. The video has gained traction on social media, with many Syrians viewing the library as a symbol of resilience. Under Bashar al-Assad's regime, certain books were highly policed, including those discussing Syrian prisons, radical Islamic theology, and politics.

Following the reported fall of Assad's regime in 2024, many Syrians have begun returning to their homes. The nation is in the process of rebuilding and economic recovery after a protracted civil war that resulted in nearly half a million deaths and widespread destruction. Over five million Syrians had sought refuge in neighboring countries.
