Syrian Man Accused of Second Rape After German Release

A Syrian man, identified as Ahmad A., 26, is accused of sexually assaulting a second woman in Munich, Germany, just weeks after he was released from police custody. He had been under investigation for the rape of a 16-year-old girl when he was let go.

Ahmad A. was initially arrested on February 27, 2025, in connection with the assault at an asylum accommodation center in Munich. His detention was suspended on April 8, 2025, after prosecutors determined they could no longer meet the legal requirement to expedite proceedings for detainees, as the teenage victim was unable to attend questioning due to her psychological state.

Prosecutors explained that the victim's testimony was considered central to the case. The defense lawyer for Ahmad A. has disputed the prosecution's account, stating that his client claims the encounter was consensual.

Following his release, Ahmad A. was required to report to police twice weekly and was prohibited from contacting the teenage victim or a witness. However, on July 15, 2025, he allegedly attacked another woman along with two other men, Haidar A., 31, and Mousa H., 27, both reportedly from Yemen.

According to court documents, the 29-year-old woman encountered Ahmad A. near a subway station and asked him for a cigarette. The indictment states that the three men later led her to an isolated staircase beneath the Wittelsbacher Bridge, where Ahmad A. allegedly dragged her down the stairs as she resisted. All three are accused of taking turns assaulting her.

After the alleged assault, the men reportedly walked with the woman towards a petrol station. She then spotted a group of people and created a distraction by dropping a water bottle before running towards them. The three suspects fled the scene.

Police arrested the suspects in September 2025. The case is currently being heard at Munich I Regional Court. Ahmad A. was previously convicted in the case involving the teenage girl, receiving a two-year and six-month prison sentence in November 2025. He faces potential further imprisonment if convicted in the second case. The circumstances of his release from custody pending the first investigation have raised questions regarding the progression of legal proceedings.
