Sydney Swans Address Player Rumors Amid Contract Speculation

The Sydney Swans are confident that key players Nick Blakey and Chad Warner will remain with the club, addressing rumors surrounding their futures.

Blakey, a five-star player, has been linked to a potential move back to his home state of Victoria. However, Swans list manager Chris Keane has dismissed these rumors, stating the club has received no indication that Blakey wishes to explore other options. "Nick's actually been really good through this whole process and understanding of the club's decision," Keane told reporters. "The last couple of months have been challenging on a lot of different fronts, but Nick's been really good and understanding of the club's position."

Blakey was one of five players who served a club-imposed ban through the finals for behavioral standards breaches at the Pullman Hotel in East Melbourne. The other players suspended were vice-captain Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Riley Bice, and James Jordon. All five players were ineligible for selection from Round 24 through the club's preliminary final loss.

Blakey is currently under contract with the Swans until 2031, with a reported deal exceeding $1 million per season. Keane emphasized the club's confidence in retaining him, denying any tension between Blakey and the organization. "We've had no indication from Nick or his management that he's keen to explore anything, so we're really confident that he'll be at our footy club next year," Keane said.

Regarding Chad Warner, the West Coast Eagles, who had previously pursued the midfielder, have stated they will not be making a bid for him during the upcoming trade period. "Things are pretty clear where Chad sits for next year," said West Coast list boss Matt Clarke. "He'll be at the Swans next year."

Warner and Jordon are contracted until the end of 2027, while Heeney and Bice are signed through to the end of 2028. Heeney recently won the club's best and fairest award and expressed his commitment to continuing his career with Sydney in a pre-recorded video.

The five players have since returned to the club and have individually apologized to their teammates and colleagues. Keane described their reintroduction a few weeks prior as a "good step forward and something that was necessary."

The Swans anticipate a quiet trade period, with the exception of key forward Joel Amartey's confirmed move to Carlton as an unrestricted free agent. A second-round pick, currently No. 36, will be acquired by the Swans in that transaction. "This year was more around retention," Keane noted.
