Organizers of the Sydney Marathon, Australia's largest marathon, have publicly addressed a significant error on the medals intended for participants. The medals mistakenly feature a depiction of the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, rather than the intended Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
The mix-up was revealed after the Sydney Marathon organizers shared a preview of the medals on social media. The error quickly gained international attention, prompting responses from the German stadium itself.
"You may have noticed that a little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal with an incorrect depiction of the stadium," event organizers stated on Sunday. They characterized the error as "unfortunate" but added that it has "certainly given everyone something to talk about it this weekend, mostly in good humour."
A record 41,000 competitors from 120 countries are expected to participate in the upcoming 42.2km marathon, which passes numerous Sydney landmarks. The medals, which will not be amended, are now considered by organizers to be "a little more unique."
Organizers emphasized that the error does not diminish the accomplishment of the runners. "What it represents does not change," they said. "Behind every one of these medals is months of early mornings, long runs and quiet determination, and having it placed around your neck at the Sydney Opera House is a moment our participants will never forget."
The Allianz Arena in Munich, home to the Bayern Munich soccer team, responded humorously on social media, acknowledging that "Mistakes happen." The stadium also wished participants good luck and extended an invitation to visit their venue in Germany.
The artistic contribution of Indigenous artist Ambrose Killian, who designed the front of the medal and the lanyard, has been clarified. Killian stated that his work was limited to the front of the medal and the lanyard, and he had no involvement in the design or production of the reverse side where the stadium error occurred. He reiterated that his artwork's story, importance, and originality remain unaffected.
The course of the Sydney Marathon begins in North Sydney and concludes at the Opera House.
