Trelease Associates, a Sydney-based buyers' agency, has entered voluntary liquidation, leaving behind substantial debts and unresolved allegations of financial impropriety. The agency, which catered to affluent clients and was known for its opulent social scene, reportedly owes unsecured creditors close to $2.6 million.
At the center of the turmoil is a legal battle initiated in early 2024 by the agency's director, Daniel Trelease, against his former executive manager, chief financial officer, and personal assistant, Jacqueline Clow. Trelease accused Clow of siphoning over $675,000 from the business and himself personally. Clow, who had worked with Trelease for more than six years and allegedly had exclusive access to company and personal accounts, denied the allegations. Court documents claimed that the alleged losses contributed significantly to the agency's downfall.
Unresolved Allegations and Sudden Death
The legal proceedings against Clow were abruptly halted when she died suddenly in March 2025, at the age of 58. Consequently, the allegations against her were never formally tested in court. Friends of Clow, who was a former socialite with ties to Sydney's hospitality scene, expressed shock at the claims, with some suggesting there was more to the story. Her partner, William Clark, paid tribute to her online, describing her as his "beautiful lady" and "Queen Bee."
Workplace Culture and Text Messages
Former employees have described a "boys' club" culture within Trelease Associates, with allegations of crude banter and blurred boundaries filtering down from leadership. Text messages reportedly sent by Daniel Trelease to staff late at night, seen by the Daily Mail, depicted a pattern of boastful and sometimes erratic communication. These messages allegedly referenced partying with celebrities, including John Travolta and members of One Direction, as well as "royal daughters" and a cousin of Lenny Kravitz. Some texts alluded to witnessing an A-list celebrity perform a lewd act with a tennis ball, while others recounted outlandish stories of yachting accidents and new captains.
According to sources, Trelease would also allegedly allude to wild parties he attended with Clow and her partner, William Clark, during weekends away at their home in Kiama. These texts, while suggestive of a permissive workplace, were not described as harassing or unwelcome.
Financial Woes and Liquidation
In a statement to administrators, Trelease attributed the business collapse to "recently found out fraud," "theft and malfeasance," and his own "poor management and oversight." However, the liquidator identified additional contributing factors, including declining revenue, persistent cash flow issues, undercapitalization, mounting tax debts, and potentially insolvent trading dating back to July 2020. The administrator, Jamieson Louttit, concluded that the business had accumulated unsustainable debt, particularly as the property market slowed, rendering it unable to meet its creditor obligations. Among the debts are nearly $85,000 owed to the Australian Taxation Office.
Aftermath and Resurfacing
Following the business's collapse and amidst rumors of his disappearance from Sydney, Daniel Trelease has reportedly resurfaced in the city's eastern suburbs. Until recently, he was employed at a real estate agency in Rose Bay, where his profile described him as a reputable former owner of a leading buyers' agency. However, his profile has since been removed from the agency's website.
