A lightning strike on Fort Myers Beach, Florida, on Friday resulted in the death of one swimmer and injuries to three others, prompting local authorities to issue a stern warning to beachgoers. The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. when a family of four was struck by lightning while in the water.

Viktar Kiryk, 51, was identified as the sole fatality. Bystanders and first responders attempted to provide aid after pulling Kiryk from the water, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The three injured individuals were transported to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

The Fort Myers Beach Fire District responded to the scene and alerted the public to the danger. "This tragic incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder that Florida’s summer storms can develop rapidly," the Lee County Sheriff's Office stated. "If you hear thunder or see lightning, get out of the water immediately and seek safe shelter."

Authorities emphasized the importance of safety during severe weather, reminding the public that lightning can travel up to 10 miles from a storm's center. They advise seeking shelter indoors for at least 30 minutes after hearing thunder. Residents and visitors were urged to remain weather-aware and prioritize safety.

Eyewitnesses at a nearby condo complex reported hearing a loud thunderclap shortly before the incident and then observing emergency responders on the beach. Some beachgoers noted that they had left the beach earlier due to changing weather conditions. The victim's body remained on the beach for approximately three hours until the coroner arrived.

Condolences were extended to Kiryk's family and loved ones by the Town of Fort Myers Beach and the Lee County Sheriff's Office, which also thanked those who acted quickly to assist the victims.
