Swimmer Dies After Being Found on Rocks at Big Sur Beach
Officials warn beachgoers about dangerous coastal conditions after a search-and-recovery effort at Sand Dollar Beach.
A swimmer has died at a rugged section of California’s Big Sur coast after being found on rocks following a search-and-recovery operation, firefighters reported.
The man was reported missing shortly after 1 p.m. at Sand Dollar Beach. Big Sur Fire Chief Matt Harris confirmed the incident.
Emergency crews conducted a search for approximately 20 minutes before locating the individual on the rocks. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a helicopter to assist in the search along the coastline. Rescuers attempted CPR after retrieving the man from the rocks but were unable to save him.
The circumstances surrounding the swimmer’s death are currently under investigation.
Officials are urging beachgoers to exercise caution along the Central California coast, citing powerful ocean swells, slippery rocks, and significant tidal movements that can create hazardous conditions. "The ocean is unforgiving," Harris stated, emphasizing the dangers posed by the current conditions, including a significant northwest swell and slippery rocks.
Authorities advise swimmers to check ocean conditions before entering the water and to be aware of their limitations and the risks associated with powerful surf.
