A former collegiate swimmer accused of beating a security guard to death with a water bottle in Hawaii had stopped attending Concordia University Irvine last year, school officials confirmed. Legend Storer, 20, faces second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and indecent exposure charges in connection with the Aug. 5 incident.
Concordia University Irvine, a private school in Orange County, California, confirmed Storer was a student and competed on its men's swim team. However, after the university ended its men's swimming program in May 2025, Storer did not return as a student, the Orange County Register reported. Storer has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to police and prosecutors, Storer is accused of breaking into a condominium complex office in Kahana, Maui, around 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 5. Inside, 63-year-old security guard Michael Dyer was reportedly on a break when the alleged attack occurred. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Storer attacking Dyer with a five-gallon water bottle. Dyer was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
More than an hour after the alleged killing, police received reports of a naked man wandering in the neighborhood. Officers located Storer approximately 30 minutes later, suffering from multiple abrasions, and transported him to a hospital for evaluation. Investigators later determined, based on surveillance footage review, that the man taken to the hospital was the same individual seen attacking Dyer.
Dyer's family described him as a devoted husband and father. "Mike was a family man and very devoted to his wife, Joy. Our family is in the process of setting up a GoFundMe to help with this sudden and tragic event," his relatives said in a statement.
Storer previously attended Maui Preparatory Academy and competed for the Lahaina Swim Club. At Maui Prep, he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion, according to his former university profile. He is currently being held in Maui jail without bail. Prosecutors have classified Storer as an alleged "offender against the elderly" due to Dyer's age, which could lead to a more severe sentence if convicted.
