Swifties Erupt at Seahawks for Jabbing Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift
Seattle's social media post celebrating a win over the Chiefs sparks backlash from fans of the pop superstar.
The Seattle Seahawks' social media team faced swift backlash from Taylor Swift's fanbase after posting a playful jab at Travis Kelce following the Kansas City Chiefs' loss on Sunday Night Football. The team's post, which alluded to Swift's music and her fans' signature friendship bracelets, ignited a firestorm of criticism from self-proclaimed Swifties.
Following the Seahawks' 20-3 victory over the previously undefeated Chiefs, Seattle's official X account shared an image of friendship bracelets bearing the words 'Seahawks Win.' The accompanying caption, 'End Game,' referenced a song from Swift's 2017 album 'Reputation.' This move, intended as a lighthearted taunt, was perceived by many Swift fans as disrespectful to both Kelce and Swift.
Fans flooded the team's post with angry comments, accusing the Seahawks' social media admin of misogyny and classlessness. Some responses were particularly aggressive, with one user suggesting an ACL tear for a player before the season ends, and another stating, 'I am calling on ALL my fellow Swifties to summon the extensive “Tayvoodoo” and Etsy witches at our disposal before Seattle’s next game.' Others questioned the team's decision to target the spouse of an opposing player, arguing that Swift deserves respect regardless of her connection to Kelce.
However, a segment of the fanbase defended the Seahawks' post, with some Swifties acknowledging the humor and recognizing it as typical sports trash talk. These fans suggested that those most offended might be newer to sports fandom, having only become interested after Swift and Kelce's relationship gained public attention. They argued that the post was not a direct attack on Swift but rather an attempt to engage with the broader cultural phenomenon surrounding her and her relationship.
One user commented, 'As a swiftie, the ones getting mad abt smth like this only got into football when Taylor and Travis got together. Sorry not sorry. Go hawks!!!' Another added, 'Noooo my fellow swifties you’re giving them what they want!!! it’s also funny come on you guys this is apart of the sport!! They aren’t picking on our Taylor I promise but trying to get a rise out of fans? Yes and it worked.'
Neither Travis Kelce nor Taylor Swift have publicly commented on the Seahawks' post or the ensuing fan reaction.
