Swansea Council Cancels 'Too Raunchy' Magic Mike-Inspired Show
A Channing Tatum lookalike's male strip show, Magic Men, was abruptly canceled by Swansea Council due to concerns over its perceived explicit nature.
A Magic Mike-inspired show in Swansea, led by a performer known for his resemblance to Channing Tatum, has been canceled by the local council due to concerns that the performance was "too raunchy." Will Parfitt, 36, the lead performer for the group Magic Men, stated that the council informed them of the cancellation shortly before the scheduled performance at the Brangwyn Hall.
"They told us they had just cancelled. They said the show was ‘too raunchy,’" Parfitt said, expressing his disappointment. He noted that this cancellation affects their limited number of performances in Wales and could cause financial hardship for his fellow dancers, who are paid per show. Parfitt also expressed concern for fans who had booked accommodations and travel for the event.
A spokesperson for Swansea Council confirmed the decision, stating, "We’ve taken the decision not to go ahead with Saturday’s Magic Men show at the Brangwyn Hall following concerns raised with us." The council has assured ticket holders that they will receive a full refund. "We’re sorry for the disappointment this will cause," the spokesperson added.
Parfitt, whose act has gained popularity partly due to his likeness to Tatum, the star of the Magic Mike films, believes the show was banned due to its sexualized content. He emphasized that the show often defies stereotypes and aims to be more than what people might expect. He mentioned that previous performances in Wales, including in North Wales and Cardiff, have been successful and enjoyable.
Fans have voiced their opinions on the cancellation, with one attendee calling it an overreaction. She recalled seeing the show in Cardiff two years prior and described it as "just men dancing on stage topless and seductively with a little tease." She also noted that a previous Chippendales performance in Swansea several years ago was, in her opinion, more revealing.
Parfitt has offered to upgrade attendees of other shows to a meet-and-greet with him and the Magic Men as a gesture of apology. He suggested that the council's decision might be controversial, stating, "Apparently too much action for Wales I think the girls would disagree."
