Suspicious Fire Forces Evacuations Near Hotel Previously Used for Migrants

Dozens of families were evacuated from their homes following a substantial fire at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone, Kent. The blaze, which is believed to have started in the basement, prompted the evacuation of approximately 280 hotel guests and led to 90 residents being moved from nearby properties due to concerns about the building's structural integrity.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, with around 26 fire engines deployed to the scene. Flames rapidly spread through the hotel, leaving significant damage, including charred rubble, blackened walls, and hanging debris. Burnt-out cars were also observed lined up outside the property.

Authorities are treating the fire as suspicious and have appealed for witnesses. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Folkestone and Hythe District Council stated they are working to arrange alternative housing for the displaced residents.

The Grand Burstin Hotel has a history of housing asylum seekers. In 2014, it accommodated approximately 130 asylum seekers to alleviate overcrowding, and in 2019, it housed 59 asylum seekers as an emergency measure. The hotel is currently operating as a commercial establishment open to the public.

One hotel guest, Jeff Gardner from Texas, described hearing what he believed to be explosions and seeing smoke turn from grey to black as he evacuated. He noted that many guests left with minimal possessions. Local businesses, including a nearby pub, opened their doors to provide warmth and assistance to those evacuated.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service reported on Sunday morning that one fire engine remained at the scene to monitor for hotspots. Police are urging anyone with information or relevant CCTV or dashcam footage from the area between 10 p.m. on Friday and 12:30 a.m. on Saturday to contact Kent Police by quoting reference 46/155727/26.
