A suspect in an investigation into child abuse material died by suicide when police executed a search warrant at his home in Leura, New South Wales, on Tuesday morning. John Haynes, 41, was found by officers from the NSW Police Sex Crimes Squad in his bedroom wielding a knife before he fatally stabbed himself, according to police.
Detectives entered Haynes' one-bedroom apartment in the Blue Mountains, approximately 100 kilometers west of Sydney, shortly after 7 a.m. Police rendered first aid to Haynes and called for paramedics, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A critical incident team from the Mt Druitt Police Area Command is leading an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which will also undergo an internal review and be prepared for the Coroner.
Neighbours described Haynes as a reclusive printing worker who had lived in the apartment for about eight years and had minimal interaction with them. One neighbour reported being woken by the sound of police attempting to breach the front door and a door connecting Haynes' unit to an adjacent apartment. "Goes to show you don't know what people are doing behind closed doors," the neighbour said. Another neighbour, Philip Shearer, expressed shock at the allegations, suggesting Haynes may have taken his own life to avoid imprisonment. Shearer also mentioned a persistent feeling of unease emanating from Haynes' residence.
Haynes had limited online presence. A social media post from approximately four months prior showed him seeking information about damage to his Toyota Camry in a local Facebook group, offering a reward for any details leading to the offender.
