Suspected ISIS Sympathizer Arrested in Mall of America Attack Plot
An 18-year-old Minnesota man allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS and purchased an AK-47-style rifle with plans to carry out a mass shooting at the Mall of America, the FBI announced.
An 18-year-old Minnesota man was arrested after allegedly purchasing an AK-47-style rifle, magazines, and ammunition from an undercover FBI employee as part of a plot to attack the Mall of America. The suspect, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, had reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS and discussed carrying out a mass shooting.
According to an affidavit filed in federal court in Minnesota, Mohamud had been discussing his intentions for months. In September, he told an FBI confidential source, "I can’t wait until I kill kuffar man. October 24 is the day insha Allah." When asked about the specific date, Mohamud allegedly indicated it was due to a "Hmong Arts Celebration" at the Mall of America, stating it would draw "a lot of people."
Mohamud is now charged with knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition while aware that they would be used to commit a felony and a federal crime of terrorism.
