Suspected Gunman Sought Near Notre Dame Campus During Football Game

A search for a suspected gunman was underway Saturday night near the University of Notre Dame campus, prompting an emergency alert and shelter-in-place orders for students and faculty.

The incident occurred in the Eddy Street Commons area, adjacent to the campus, while Notre Dame's football team was playing Michigan State. The university's emergency alert system indicated the suspect was last seen on the southern edge of campus as law enforcement conducted a search of the area.

Individuals inside Notre Dame Stadium were instructed to remain in their current locations, while others on campus were advised to shelter in place. The suspect was described as a heavy-set Black male wearing blue shorts, a black shirt, and one white shoe, according to the alert.

St. Joseph County Dispatch received the initial call reporting shots fired at approximately 7:37 p.m. One person was transported to a hospital, though authorities have not yet released details regarding the individual's condition or the circumstances of the reported gunfire.

Law enforcement advised the public to avoid the area while the search continued.
