A suspect believed to be responsible for a fire that destroyed a 173-year-old Brooklyn church was apprehended after an off-duty police officer witnessed him shoplifting from a convenience store, according to sources.

John Jones, 24, was taken into custody at approximately 1:39 a.m. at a CVS store on Broadway. Sources reported that the officer, who was working a security shift, observed Jones attempting to steal a turkey sandwich, a Coke, and donuts.

Upon running Jones's information, law enforcement discovered an active warrant for his arrest related to the torching of the South Bushwick Reformed Church. Authorities had reportedly been investigating Jones as the alleged arsonist behind a three-alarm fire that occurred on June 19. The blaze caused significant damage, including the destruction of the church's historic spire and thousands of artifacts.

Sources indicated that Jones was seen on camera fleeing the church premises shortly before the fire erupted. He faces a federal complaint in the Eastern District of New York. Additionally, Jones was charged with criminal mischief for allegedly smashing a television at a Williamsburg restaurant on June 28, causing $900 in damages.

The specific charges against Jones in relation to the church fire have not yet been detailed.
