Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty Friday in a federal courtroom in New York to the killing of Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare. The shooting occurred on a Manhattan street in December 2024.
Mangione, who was wearing a beige prison uniform and white t-shirt, had his feet shackled as he appeared before Judge Margaret Garnett. U.S. Marshals were present but did not handcuff him. The courtroom was filled with reporters, supporters of Mangione, observers, and a lottery-selected group of court staff. Seated in the front row behind the prosecution were members of Thompson's family.
This marked the first time Mangione has described his commission of the crime in court. The case had garnered worldwide attention over more than a year-and-a-half of legal proceedings and public scrutiny. Mangione conferred with his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, reviewing documents prior to the hearing, which began shortly after its scheduled 11:00 a.m. start time.
