Suspect in Paris Suburb Shooting Under Psychiatric Observation
The individual detained in connection with a fatal shooting in a Paris suburb has been sent for psychiatric evaluation to determine their fitness for interrogation.
The suspect in a shooting that left one person dead and four injured in a Paris suburb has been placed under psychiatric observation to assess their mental state and ability to undergo questioning. Authorities stated this evaluation is necessary to determine if their psychiatric health is compatible with continuing the interrogation.
One person killed in the attack has been identified as Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old French-Congolese martial artist. The mixed martial arts club where Wangi trained paid tribute to him, remembering him as someone who led by example, was respectful, and always ready to support others. His smile, energy, and generosity were highlighted by the club.
Among the injured, a 12-year-old girl remains in critical condition, though local reports indicate she is improving. Two other residents were injured, one of whom is recovering while the other is still in critical condition. The mayor of La Verrière, Nicolas Dainville, has spoken with the girl's mother, who confirmed her daughter was doing better.
The suspect was known to police for previous offenses, though not to national intelligence services. Local media reported that the suspect had four prior convictions that were expunged. The weapon used in the attack is believed to be an older semi-automatic firearm, fired from a vehicle.
Wangi's lawyer expressed skepticism about the decision to place the suspect under observation, suggesting it is a rare move that could be used to argue for criminal irresponsibility rather than intentional action.
