Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested after a roughly 33-hour manhunt and is facing charges in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, authorities said. Law enforcement officials said the search ended when Robinson’s father recognized him in FBI-released photos and persuaded his son to turn himself in; Robinson now faces aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice, and investigators said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, speaking at a news conference, said investigators recovered casings engraved with anti-fascist messages and other markings from the scene. Cox said evidence and witness cooperation, including messages produced by a roommate, indicated Robinson discussed obtaining a rifle from a drop point, leaving it in a bush and modifying ammunition and optics. Investigators spent Friday collecting evidence at an apartment Robinson shared with a roommate as they continue to piece together the events that led to the Wednesday shooting.

Former classmates from Pine View High School in St. George, Utah, described Robinson in yearbook photos as a smiling, academically focused student who participated in the auto mechanics club and excelled in mathematics. One former classmate, Jaida Funk, said she had long pictured Robinson becoming a businessman or executive. Other peers recalled a quieter side of his social life; one described him as a so‑called "Reddit kid," warning that online communities can shift beliefs and spur extreme actions.

Robinson’s social media and family profiles showed frequent family outings and smiling photos, but also images of him at shooting ranges and posing with high‑caliber weapons. Investigators noted those images as part of a broader look into his past and current behavior. Police said Robinson had a longtime interest in firearms, and photos posted online included one showing him with an M2 Browning .50‑caliber machine gun.

School records and family posts indicate Robinson earned a four‑year scholarship to Utah State University but attended for only one semester before enrolling at Dixie Technical College, where officials said he was a third‑year student in an electrical apprenticeship program. He lived with family in Washington, Utah, in a home described in court documents as a six‑bedroom residence.

Authorities provided additional detail about how the manhunt concluded. Officials said Robinson initially told his father he would rather kill himself than surrender, but he ultimately agreed to speak with a local youth minister with ties to the U.S. Marshals Service and surrendered to law enforcement. He was taken into custody late Thursday night in southern Utah, according to a law enforcement timeline released by state officials.

Cox called the assassination a "watershed moment" in American history and said investigators had learned from Robinson’s family that he had become more political in recent months and had expressed antipathy toward Kirk, describing him to relatives as "full of hate." The governor and investigators said some of the casings recovered bore inscriptions referencing anti‑fascist symbols and phrases, including a reference to the World War II Italian anti‑fascist song "Bella Ciao" and other markings.

Prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder and related counts; a probable cause affidavit filed in the case details the recovered evidence and the cooperation of a roommate who provided investigators with Discord messages. Those messages, officials said, included discussions of weapons placement, the retrieval and concealment of a rifle and references to engraved bullets and a scope.

Charlie Kirk, a 31‑year‑old conservative commentator and the founder of a political organization, was struck once and died after the attack on the Utah Valley University campus on Wednesday. The shooting has drawn national attention because of Kirk’s profile and because law enforcement and state leaders described the killing as politically consequential.

Investigators said the case remains active and that they are continuing to collect and analyze physical evidence, digital communications and witness statements. Officials declined to release additional forensic details pending further processing, and court documents indicate Robinson is being held without bail as prosecutors prepare formal charging decisions and consider capital penalties.
