An Iraqi national with a history of murder convictions, identified as Abbas Abdoush, 57, has been arrested and is facing deportation following an alleged assault on activist Jake Long. The incident occurred on August 2 at an annual religious celebration in Dearborn, Michigan, where Long was reportedly using a bullhorn to voice anti-immigrant sentiments.
According to federal authorities, Abdoush, who entered the U.S. in 1992, lost his legal status after a 1999 conviction for second-degree murder in Detroit. He served over 15 years for the crime. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ordered his removal from the country in June 2022.
ICE took Abdoush into custody on August 5 after he was released from local police custody. He is currently being held at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan, and will receive due process, an ICE statement confirmed.
Video footage from the event shows Long shouting pro-ICE rhetoric before a man, identified as Abdoush, punches him from behind. The footage then shows a group of individuals chasing Long, punching him, and throwing rocks until police intervened and placed Long in a cruiser.
Abdoush was arrested along with two other men, aged 25, from Detroit and Dearborn, respectively. The extent of their alleged involvement in the assault is not immediately clear.
This is not the first time Long has been involved in clashes. Last year, he was part of a protest in Dearborn, after which he threatened the city's mayor and police chief with a lawsuit, alleging a lack of adequate protection. Long also participated in the January 6 U.S. Capitol riots, for which he served four years in prison. In March, he was accused of threatening a Capitol Police officer.
Long previously ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida with a platform that included banning Islam, but he withdrew his candidacy after failing to qualify for the 2026 Republican primary. His activism has drawn significant opposition from some segments of the Muslim community.
It remains unknown if Abdoush has retained legal counsel.
