Law enforcement officials and media reports identified the suspect in the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk as 22‑year‑old Tyler Robinson, who was taken into custody late Thursday night in southern Utah after a manhunt that stretched more than a day.

Robinson was arrested around 11 p.m. local time, The New York Times reported. Law enforcement sources who spoke to the Daily Mail said Robinson was turned in by someone close to him and that he confessed to a family member before officers located and detained him. Authorities at a Thursday news conference said the suspect, if convicted, could face the death penalty; officials have not released a motive.

The arrest followed a chaotic investigation after Kirk was shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem on Wednesday. University officials said the shot came from the top of the Losee Center roughly 200 yards from the tented gazebo where Kirk was taking questions. Surveillance footage released by investigators showed a figure on a rooftop immediately after the shooting who then leaped from a building and ran into a nearby neighborhood.

Kirk, 31, was struck by a single bullet as he answered a question about mass shootings and collapsed. He was rushed to a hospital and later died. He is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, and two young children, a three‑year‑old daughter and a 16‑month‑old son. President Donald Trump posted a tribute on Truth Social and directed that American flags be lowered to half‑staff through Sunday evening in Kirk’s honor.

Authorities said the manhunt prompted multiple detentions and tips, including erroneous arrests that were later resolved. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox initially said a person of interest was in custody, but FBI Director Kash Patel later confirmed that the individual had been released after questioning. Investigators had offered a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the suspect’s capture.

Officials said investigators recovered a weapon near the scene and that ammunition recovered from it bore engravings referencing transgender and antifascist ideology. Police have not publicly tied those markings to a motive, and court records have not yet been filed outlining charges. Local and federal law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation.

Media reports and law enforcement sources also described elements of the suspect’s background. Public records reported by the Daily Mail said Robinson lived in Washington, Utah, in a six‑bedroom home valued at about $600,000, roughly 260 miles south of Orem. Local authorities declined to comment on many details pending the completion of initial investigative steps and the filing of formal charges.

Kirk rose to national prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization he launched in 2012. He had been a prominent supporter of former President Trump and a frequent on‑campus speaker, drawing large crowds at college events. Turning Point and Kirk had become fixtures in Republican politics, and Kirk himself had amassed a substantial social media following and media profile.

The shooting and subsequent arrest came amid a spate of politically charged violence in the United States this year, in incidents that law enforcement and political leaders across the spectrum have cited as cause for concern. Officials pointed to recent attacks that targeted public figures and public events as part of a troubling national trend of politically motivated violence.

Governor Cox said he had spoken with the president and vowed to work with the FBI and Utah law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice. "We will bring to justice the individual responsible for this tragedy," Cox wrote on X. He and other state officials have offered prayers and condolences to Kirk’s family.

Investigators have said they will release additional information as the probe continues. Federal and local agencies handling the case cautioned that more details will be disclosed in official filings and briefings as charges are prepared and evidence is reviewed.
