Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah native, was taken into custody on Sept. 12 after a family member recognized him in surveillance images tied to the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, federal and local officials said.
Investigators described the family member's identification as pivotal in ending a nationwide manhunt. CBS News, citing two law enforcement sources, reported that the relative was Robinson's father, who encouraged his son to turn himself in and then contacted a family friend who notified the sheriff's office. At a Friday briefing announcing the arrest, FBI officials said they were "confident we have the right individual in custody," but declined to discuss Robinson's background, political leanings or a possible motive as the probe continues.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said a family member interviewed by investigators told authorities that Robinson had become "more political" in recent years. The relative said Robinson had commented during a dinner conversation before the attack that Kirk "was full of hate and spreading hate" and referenced Kirk's scheduled appearance at Utah Valley University, Cox said.
Public records reviewed by the BBC indicate Robinson was registered as an unaffiliated, or nonpartisan, voter in Utah, while his parents, Matthew Carl Robinson and Amber Denise Robinson, are registered Republicans. Authorities said Robinson had been living with his parents "for a long time." Records suggest Robinson attended Utah State University in Logan for a single semester in 2021 and may have been studying engineering; he was not enrolled at Utah Valley University, the site of the shooting.
Investigators said physical evidence recovered at the scene included shell casings bearing handwritten inscriptions that appear to reference online trolling culture, anti-fascist symbolism and partisan protest songs. One fired casing reportedly bore the phrase "notices bulges OwO what's this?", echoing an internet "copypasta" often used to troll users. An unfired casing was inscribed with the words "If you read this, you are gay lmao." Other markings have been interpreted by some investigators as sympathetic to anti-fascist activists, including an inscription of the Italian partisan song "Bella Ciao." Authorities have not released images of the casings.
Officials also said Robinson appeared active on Discord, a social platform popular with gamers and other online communities. A roommate showed investigators messages from a contact named "Tyler" that referenced a rifle "drop point" and instructions about retrieving and hiding a weapon, according to law enforcement sources.
Robinson remains in custody as prosecutors prepare formal charges. Federal and local authorities have said the investigation is ongoing as they seek to establish a full picture of Robinson's background, affiliations and motives. Officials have described the killing as among the most significant politically related attacks in recent U.S. history.
Federal agents and local law enforcement have so far declined to offer further detail about the evidence linking Robinson to the shooting, citing the active nature of the probe. Prosecutors must still decide which charges to file and whether to pursue federal as well as state counts. Investigators said they will continue to review digital communications, social-media activity and other material to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.
The arrest followed a multi-jurisdictional effort that included review of surveillance footage, tips from the public and interviews with family and associates. Authorities urged anyone with additional information about the shooting or Robinson's recent activities to come forward as the inquiry proceeds.
