Capitola, California – Authorities are seeking the public's help to identify a suspect accused of stealing a bearded dragon from a pet store in Capitola. The incident occurred on Thursday at the Pet Emporium on 41st Avenue.
Surveillance footage captured a man, described as having a beard and wearing a Hawaiian shirt and long pants, interacting with the reptile's enclosure shortly before the 12-inch juvenile bearded dragon was discovered missing. The suspect was seen leaving the area in a lighter-colored, older van. Police believe the suspect frequents the Capitola area.
The Capitola Police Department shared images from the surveillance video on Facebook, urging the community to help locate the missing animal and ensure its well-being. "Let’s help this little guy to make sure he’s properly cared for! Please share this post to spread the word," the department stated.
The Pet Emporium, a family-owned business that offers a variety of pet supplies and services, has not yet recovered the missing reptile. A representative from the store confirmed that no updates on the bearded dragon's whereabouts have been received.
This case is not the first unusual animal-related incident in the region. In 2020, a man in Soquel faced charges after allegedly refusing to return a dog he was paid to train.
Capitola Police are asking anyone with information regarding the suspect's identity to contact Officer N. Sherin by emailing [email protected] or by calling (831) 471-1141.
