A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead at her home in Dartmoor. Police took the suspect into custody at his council house in South Yorkshire on Saturday night following a large operation involving armed officers.
CCTV footage shows the suspect leaving his Rotherham estate shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, the day Widdecombe was allegedly killed. The footage reportedly shows a baton or pole, over a foot long, in his pocket. Neighbors described the man as a recluse who had become more introverted after his father's death last year. He was filmed getting into a red hatchback before allegedly traveling approximately 267 miles to Widdecombe's home.
Police believe the 78-year-old former MP was killed shortly after midday on Wednesday. Her body was discovered the following morning. The suspect, a 28-year-old white British national, was arrested in South Yorkshire.
Devon and Cornwall Police stated there is no indication that the murder was politically motivated or terrorism-related, despite Widdecombe's public profile as a former Conservative MP, MEP for the Brexit Party, and spokesperson for Reform UK. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman urged the public not to engage in speculation, emphasizing that it is unhelpful and distressing to the victim's family and friends.
Detectives remain open-minded about the motive but stressed that there is no perceived threat to the wider public. Reform UK is reportedly reviewing emails sent to Widdecombe in the weeks before her death for any potential threats.
Widdecombe was first elected as a Conservative MP for Kent in 1987. She later served as a Member of the European Parliament for the Brexit Party and then as a spokesperson for Reform UK.
