Suspect Arrested in Arson at Hitler's Eagle's Nest Retreat
A 33-year-old German man was taken into custody following a fire at the historic Bavarian Alps site.
A 33-year-old German man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire engulfed Adolf Hitler's former Eagle's Nest retreat in the Bavarian Alps. The blaze broke out Friday evening, and firefighters worked to contain the flames amid strong winds.
Authorities have taken the suspect, who displayed signs of mental illness, to a psychiatric facility. However, investigators are not ruling out a political motive for the arson, given the historical significance of the location. The suspect was reportedly seen leaving the mountain area on a motorcycle.
The Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle's Nest, is situated more than 6,000 feet above sea level. Accessible by elevator during tourist season, the building has operated as a seasonal restaurant and tourist attraction since 1952. It also features an exhibit detailing its history.
Hitler himself rarely visited the retreat, though he did frequent his Berghof residence in the same region, which was demolished after the war. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann stated that efforts would be made to find a "sensible solution" for the site's future, emphasizing the importance of continuing "the work of remembrance." No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
