Suspect Accused of Killing Pittsburgh Doctor Allegedly Assaulted Woman Hours Earlier

Elijah Hemingway, 32, the suspect accused of killing a Pittsburgh pediatrician and critically injuring his wife, allegedly sexually assaulted another woman just hours before the fatal home invasion, authorities said.

The Allegheny County Police Department reported that Hemingway ambushed the woman on Wednesday morning as she walked along a path in Wilkinsburg, ultimately stealing her cell phone. The victim reportedly did not know Hemingway prior to the alleged assault.

Wilkinsburg police alerted Allegheny County detectives, who integrated the investigation into the sexual assault with the ongoing homicide case. Detectives stated they recovered evidence linking Hemingway to the assault, including the victim's stolen cell phone.

Following a consultation with the district attorney’s office, county police announced additional charges against Hemingway, including rape, sexual assault, and robbery.

The attack on the woman occurred in Wilkinsburg, just outside Edgewood, Pennsylvania, where Hemingway is accused of entering a home and stabbing Dr. Idris Evans, 46, and his wife while they slept early Thursday morning. Dr. Evans was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to a police report, Hemingway was reportedly wearing only his underwear during the Edgewood attack. Evans' wife told investigators that the assailant appeared "psychotic" and claimed to be "God." As the couple resisted, Evans' wife urged their two children, aged 8 and 12, to escape the residence.

Evans' wife also told police that her husband addressed the attacker as "Elijah," suggesting a possible prior connection. However, authorities have stated they could not confirm if Evans and Hemingway knew each other. The wife also reported not knowing the suspect and being unsure how he gained entry to their home.

During questioning, Hemingway provided an account of the events that conflicted with police findings. He claimed Dr. Evans had invited him into the home hours earlier and that Evans had attacked him with a knife, inflicting a stab wound to his back. Investigators stated they found no such wound on Hemingway and could not locate a bicycle he claimed to have used to travel to the residence.

Authorities have filed seven charges against Hemingway related to the Edgewood incident, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing. Court records indicate Hemingway has a criminal history dating back to 2016 and was released without bail in July for a February burglary.
