Susan Sarandon on Aging Gracefully at 80: Boxing, Subtle Procedures, and Self-Acceptance

Susan Sarandon, known for her iconic role in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and an Oscar-winning career spanning over 170 film and TV credits, recently marked her 80th birthday. The actress shared insights into her approach to aging gracefully, emphasizing a combination of healthy habits, mindful self-care, and a philosophical outlook.

Sarandon told People in 2020 that key elements to aging well include not smoking, laughing often, exercising regularly, eating well, and avoiding excessive sun exposure. She also expressed that confidence comes from being "awake" in life and becoming less concerned with others' opinions as one gets older.

Regarding cosmetic procedures, Sarandon has admitted to subtle facial liposuction under her eyes and chin. However, she avoids treatments like Botox to preserve her ability to express emotions naturally for her acting roles. "When I see people who have had massive work done, to me that isn't beauty – it is the personification of fear," she told the Daily Mail. "It's so unattractive and proves someone is not at one with what's happening naturally. Beauty comes from within, from living in gratitude and understanding that everything is out of your control."

Her skincare routine is described as simple, incorporating skin oil and tinted sunblock. As a spokesperson for L'Oréal Paris, she also utilizes the brand's latest skincare innovations, emphasizing moisturization. "For me a lot of it is all about moisturising," Sarandon told Vogue, highlighting L'Oreal Paris Age Perfect Golden Age Soin Jour Rose for its ability to penetrate without being greasy.

Fitness is another cornerstone of Sarandon's regimen. She engages in activities like biking and using a treadmill. Notably, she took up boxing ten years ago, describing it as a fun and effective workout. "I like the gym. It's really fun with all the boxers, and it's fun to hit – it's a workout!" she said.

Sarandon follows a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, with moderate carbohydrate intake. She noted that her metabolism changed after menopause, requiring her to limit the quantity of carbs, avoiding white bread and pasta while still including whole grains. She also focuses on antioxidants and limits red meat consumption due to its fat and calorie content.

Further contributing to her well-being, Sarandon limits alcohol intake and does not smoke. "And not smoking is really important, I'm not really a drinker," she told British Vogue. "I think a little bit of wine in moderation is probably good, but I think really if you drink heavily it's not great." She also credits genetics, humorously thanking her mother for good genes.
