Susan Collins Demands Apology from Troy Jackson Over War Profit Accusations
Senator calls Democratic candidate's claims 'absolutely outrageous' during Maine Senate debate.
Senator Susan Collins on Thursday demanded an apology from her Democratic challenger, Troy Jackson, after he accused her of profiting from the war in Iran during a Maine Senate debate.
Jackson, the former state Senate president, alleged that Collins was not using her influence to halt the conflict in the Middle East because "Collins and her husband are making money off this war." He further stated, "And so are a whole bunch of other people, and that’s why this doesn’t stop."
Collins, a Republican, responded with sharp indignation. "That is absolutely outrageous, and you owe me an apology," she stated. "To say that my husband and I are making money off the war in Iran is absolutely outrageous."
Jackson did not present any evidence to support his assertion during the exchange at the debate, which was broadcast by C-SPAN. The conflict in the Middle East has been a point of contention, with Jackson attempting to frame the incumbent senator as complicit in its continuation due to financial interests.
