Brazilian professional surfer Victor Bernardo and his wife, Johnni Bufkin Bernardo, sustained severe injuries and have shared graphic images of their recovery after a car crash on Southern California's Interstate 5. The couple was traveling south on the freeway returning from Catalina Island when their vehicle collided with a truck around 10:45 p.m. on August 17.
Victor, 28, was airlifted to an emergency trauma center, while Johnni was transported by ambulance. Both remain hospitalized. Victor suffered a fractured leg and a significant wound above his knee. Doctors initially used an external frame to stabilize the limb. Johnni sustained internal abdominal bleeding that required immediate surgery.
Images shared from their hospital beds show significant injuries. Johnni's photos revealed bruising around her eyes and a bandaged nose, while Victor's leg was heavily wrapped. The couple was seen holding hands, with IVs and medical wristbands indicating the severity of their condition.
Surfing filmmaker Logan “Chucky” Dulien, a friend of the Bernardos, alerted the surfing community to the accident, describing it as potentially fatal but expressing gratitude that they are alive. He noted the long and expensive road to recovery ahead and anticipated the surf community would offer support.
A GoFundMe has been established to assist with the financial burden of their recovery, covering medical treatments and living expenses during their convalescence. The couple faces further surgeries, medication, and rehabilitation, with no immediate discharge date set.
Victor Bernardo has gained recognition as a prominent Brazilian freesurfer outside the traditional competitive circuit. The accident has put his return to surfing on hold indefinitely.
