Surfer Vanishes Amid 12-Foot Waves Off California Coast

A surfer has gone missing in the rough waters off the Northern California coast, prompting a large-scale search operation. The man was last seen on Saturday afternoon at South Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore, an area recognized for its potent surf and unpredictable "sneaker waves."

The U.S. Coast Guard received distress calls around 3:34 p.m. on Saturday, reporting that an individual had been swept into the ocean. Rescue teams, including boats and helicopters, along with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene. Despite extensive efforts, the surfer could not be located.

The Coast Guard suspended its search, and personnel from the National Park Service continued efforts to find the missing man, conducting shoreline patrols. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the missing individual was a surfer and that authorities have not yet released his identity. The National Park Service is leading the ongoing search.

This incident occurred as forecasters had issued a Beach Hazards Statement for a significant stretch of the California coastline, warning of dangerous conditions. The alert, in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday evening, predicted sneaker waves, strong rip currents, and breaking waves reaching heights of 7 to 12 feet. This warning applied to the coast from San Francisco south to Monterey Bay and Big Sur.

Sneaker waves are known to surge unexpectedly far up beaches, posing a significant risk by dragging unsuspecting individuals into the water. The rugged terrain of Point Reyes is particularly hazardous, with powerful surf and shifting currents presenting dangers even to experienced water enthusiasts.

Social media users familiar with the area expressed concern, noting the extreme wave conditions and the ever-changing underwater sandbars that make the coastline exceptionally perilous. The specific circumstances leading to the surfer’s disappearance have not been disclosed, including whether he was caught by a rip current or a sneaker wave.
